ARC Rivals: 6mm ARC vs .22 ARC vs .338 ARC – Which Reigns Supreme in Your AR?

Which Reigns Supreme in Your AR?

Welcome to the ARC-off showdown—where speed, precision, and stopping power collide. Whether you’re a long-range junkie, a varmint vaporizer, or a hunter chasing big game, choosing between the 6mm ARC, .22 ARC, and .338 ARC could make or break your next build. Let’s break down these Advanced Rifle Cartridges and find out which ARC wins your heart (and your upper receiver).

Quick Hit: What’s the ARC Line All About?

Hornady’s Advanced Rifle Cartridge (ARC) family is built to squeeze the most performance out of the AR platform—longer reach, tighter groups, and heavier hits, all in semi-auto form.

Now, let’s meet the contenders.

6mm ARC – The Long-Range Sweet Spot

Think: sniper vibes, but AR-sized.

  • Platform: AR-15
  • Bullet: 6mm (.243)
  • Role: Precision, mid-to-long range hunting, DMR
  • Vibe: Hits like a .308, recoils like a kitten
  • Why It Rocks: Ballistic ninja: flat, fast, and stays supersonic past 1,000 yards
    Pairs beautifully with high-BC bullets
  • Low recoil = fast follow-ups
But Wait: Costs more than 5.56 NATO
Eats barrels faster than your standard plinker

.22 ARC – The Speed Demon

Think: .223 on a double shot of espresso.

  • Platform: AR-15
  • Bullet: .22 caliber (0.224)
  • Role: Varminting, competition, high-speed low-drag
  • Vibe: Light, fast, and flattens prairie dogs at 400 yards
  • Why It Rocks: Screaming fast (~3,300+ fps)
    Ultra-flat trajectory
  • Minimal recoil—great for all-day shooting
But Wait: Not ideal for anything bigger than coyotes
Lighter bullets mean more drift in the wind

.338 ARC – The Big-Bore Beast

Think: AR-15 with a punch that echoes.

  • Platform: AR-15
  • Bullet: .338 caliber
  • Role: Big game hunting, tactical hammer, ELR
  • Vibe: The heavyweight champ of the ARC lineup
  • Why It Rocks: Elk, bear, moose? No problem.
Big energy. Big bullets. Big respect.
  • Great for extreme long-range setups
But Wait: Packs serious recoil, heavier, pricier, and fewer rounds per mag
Ammo availability is limited for subsonic ammo and supersonic loads (for now)

Which ARC Should You Pick?

6mm ARC: Want the best mix of range, accuracy, and mild recoil? This is your go-to for a do-it-all AR.
.22 ARC: Speed freak? Pest control? Light shooter? This one’s zippy, cheap(ish), and flat-shooting fun.
.338 ARC: Hunting the heaviest hitters or building a serious AR-15? Bring the boom with .338.

Slight correction needed, it says 338 ARC is for AR10 builds and should be AR15. I like this comparison.

Just wondering if/when BCA will consider the .300 HAMR

Anyone have advice on what could be wrong with my AR-15 Pistol? I can only get 1 or 2 shots off before the spent round jams with the upcoming round. I thought I had damaged feed ramps on the barrel so I bought new barrel. It’s still doing it. I thought it was the mag I was use but that’s not it either. So I’m curious if anyone has an idea??? Could it be the buffer spring not strong enough? Could the bolt carrier be bad? (It doesn’t appear to be) could it be an adjustment needed on the gas system? (I believe it’s adjustable!?!)

I think that is called "stove piping" because the empty is usually sticking up like a stove pipe. My 308 was doing that and I increased the buffer weight, actually maxed it out with tungsten weights, and I haven't shot it a lot yet but it seems to be working now. You might need to increase the buffer weight, if it has one, that causes a little more lag time before the spring can push the BCG forward. That gives the empty a little more time to eject. I'm not an expert since I'm fairly new with AR's but my research seems to come to this conclusion.

Just bought a BCA 17HMR 20" SS barrel critter gitter. Why is it not listed in comparisons?
